Packing for Humidity, Mold and Ocean Transit
A container crossing the Pacific is a sealed metal box that heats and cools for weeks. Anything that goes in damp can come out mildewed. Anything packed loosely can shift. Island humidity makes both problems more likely, but a few habits prevent most damage.

Key takeaways
- Pack only clean, completely dry items — moisture is the enemy.
- Use new boxes; old ones stored in garages hold humidity and pests.
- Wrap wood in breathable pads, not plastic directly against the surface.
- Pack tight: full boxes, no voids, heavy items small and low.
Dry everything first
Run dehumidifiers or air-conditioning in closets and garages for a week or two before packing. Wash and fully dry towels, linens, wetsuits, rash guards and outdoor cushions. Let mattresses and rugs air out. Never pack anything that feels cool or damp to the touch.
Choose the right materials
- New, double-wall moving boxes
- Packing paper rather than newspaper (ink transfer)
- Breathable furniture pads for wood
- Desiccant packs for long transits or storage
- Plastic bins only for items that are completely dry
Protecting wood, leather and electronics
Koa and other solid woods that have lived in Hawaii's humidity may shrink in dry mainland climates. Let them acclimate indoors after delivery before polishing or placing near vents. Clean and condition leather before packing. Back up computers, remove batteries from devices you won't need, and pack electronics in original boxes when possible.
Pack for movement
- Fill every box to the top so it can't crush.
- Heavy items in small boxes, light items in large boxes.
- Wrap each fragile item individually and cushion the box bottom.
- Label every box with room and contents on two sides.
- Number boxes and keep an inventory list.
What to carry with you instead
- Passports, birth certificates, titles and financial documents
- Medications and medical records
- Jewelry and irreplaceable photos
- Laptops and work equipment
- A few weeks of clothing for your new climate
Frequently asked questions
Do I need desiccant packs in my container?
They help, especially for long transits or storage. They don't replace packing everything dry in the first place.
Can I use boxes from the store?
Clean, dry, sturdy boxes are fine. Avoid produce boxes, which can carry pests and moisture.
