Valuation and Insurance for Your Move

Valuation is the mover's liability for your belongings — and it's not the same as insurance. Understanding the difference before you sign is one of the most important protections you have, because a long ocean move carries more risk than a cross-town one.

Key takeaways

  • Interstate movers must offer Released Value and Full Value Protection.
  • Released Value is free but pays only 60 cents per pound per article.
  • Full Value Protection costs more and covers repair, replacement or current value, subject to terms.
  • Ask how ocean legs and third-party carriers are covered.

The two federal options

Released Value Protection

Included at no extra charge, but liability is limited to 60 cents per pound per item. A 10-pound TV damaged in transit would be worth $6 under this option.

Full Value Protection

The mover is liable for repairing, replacing or paying the current market value of lost or damaged items, up to the declared value of the shipment. Deductibles and exclusions vary.

Where ocean freight fits

On a Hawaii move, part of the journey is on a ship, often booked by your mover with an ocean carrier. Ask your mover in writing whether their valuation covers the entire door-to-door journey, including the ocean leg and any agents. Some companies offer separate marine or third-party coverage.

Questions to ask

  • Which valuation option is in this estimate, and what does it cost?
  • What's the deductible?
  • Are high-value items (over a set amount per pound) required to be listed separately?
  • Does coverage include the ocean leg and storage?
  • How long do I have to file a claim?

Check your homeowner's or renter's policy

Some policies cover belongings in transit; many don't. Call your insurer before the move and ask in writing.

Frequently asked questions

Is valuation the same as moving insurance?

No. Valuation is the mover's liability under federal rules. Insurance is a separate product from an insurance company that may add coverage.

What happens if I don't choose an option?

Rules vary, so read your paperwork carefully. Make an active, written choice before your move.
