Filing Claims and Complaints
Most moves arrive in good shape. When something is damaged or missing, a clear record and a timely claim make all the difference. Here's how the process generally works for interstate moves.

Key takeaways
- Note damage on the delivery receipt and take photos immediately.
- File a written claim with the mover within the federal deadline.
- Movers must acknowledge and respond to claims within set timeframes.
- If a mover won't release your goods or respond, file a complaint with FMCSA.
At delivery
- Check every numbered item against the inventory.
- Write any visible damage or missing items on the delivery receipt.
- Photograph damage and packaging.
- Keep damaged items and boxes until the claim is settled.
Filing the claim
Send a written claim to the mover listing each item, the damage and the amount you're claiming, with photos and receipts. Federal rules give you a set period after delivery to file, commonly cited as nine months. File as soon as you can.
If you can't agree
Interstate movers are required to offer a dispute settlement (arbitration) program for certain claims. Your mover must tell you how to use it.
Hostage goods and complaints
If a mover refuses to deliver unless you pay more than the law allows, or disappears with your goods, contact FMCSA through its National Consumer Complaint Database and your state attorney general. Keep every document and message.
